According to 82games.com, the Detroit Pistons had a positive net PER at three positions during the 08-09 season, meaning that their player at that spot outperformed their opposing counterpart (in terms of PER). Those three positions were shooting guard, small forward and power forward.

The Pistons spent more than $20 million per season on new players at those positions, signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to multi-year deals.

Detroit alson used all three of their draft picks improving those positions (primarily small forward) this off-season.

Detroit's point guards and centers were outperformed by their opponents this past season and the team only added Ben Wallace and Chris Wilcox (both could play C for them), while they lost Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess, players who combined for 52% of the center minutes last season.

Moving beyond Detroit; while no team finished with each of the five positions having a positive net PER, four teams had positive net PER's for four of the five. Unsurprisingly those four teams were ranked first (Cavs), second (Lakers), third (Celtics) and fourth (Magic) in regular season winning percentage.

Three teams, the Grizzlies, Clippers and Kings, had negative net PER's at all five positions; the latter two non-coincidentally had the two worst records in the NBA.

Memphis, who drafted Hasheem Thabeet with the number two overall pick, had their best net PER was at center.
